In these documents the castle is called "Castrum Vetus", in order to distinguish it from the castle of Torrazza, constructed in the same period, but called "Castrum Novum".

The castle has been built up on the border between the territories of Ivrea and Vercelli for of the defensive reasons and was often theatre of wars between the two countries.

In the 1361 Bartolomeo di Masino it sold to Amedeo di Savoia the country of Borgomasino, mantaining only the property of the castle.   The conserved documents, from the XIV to XVII the century, testify the presence of numerous disputes between the accounts Valperga di Masino and Earls of Borgomasino, that they had of the property and the title nobiliare it. These actions  demonstrate that in XVI the century the building was composed from the castle, equipped of two towers and from the Church of Saint Salvatore, of which still today they are visible the bell tower and  leave of the apse.

There are two castles puttinges in evidence: the first one that it is found to noon, belonged to Francisco Antonio Valperga; the second, than is found to midnight, was of the Earl Carlo Francisco Valperga di Masino.

In a 1818 landslide it damaged the castle seriously.

In the 1845 family of Earl Valperga of Masino it was extinguished and Earls Masino of Borgomasino inherited the title it of Earls Valperga di Masino. Later on  part of the castle to noon  was donated the nuns in order to install an asylum to us and leaves to  the Parish of Saint Salvatore.

Towards the 1870 it was built up on the ancient structure mails to midnight  a residential villa, planned dalla' Siniscalchi architect of Turin according to the wish of the Earl Luigi Valperga di Masino.

The castle therefore transformed is remained property of Earls Valperga di Masino until half of 1989 when it was acquired and restored from it puts into effect them owners.
